There’s something special about donning a jacket and meandering the stone mortared paths lined with boutiques decked out with lights and pine garland. As the fresh air cools your face and you catch the scent of cinnamon and nutmeg steaming from hot apple cider, you feel your spirits swell, holiday style.

Union Square Holiday Market

Last year, my daughter and I searched for Christmas markets in NYC and selected the Urbanspace Union Square Holiday Market. We found that the market had a lot to offer. We tried on wool hats and scarves; smelled sprigs of lavender and perfume; handled jewelry and Christmas ornaments; and laughed at the pet outfits on display. Though we bought several gifts, the vendor that we liked best was Squish Marshmallow, and it wasn’t because of their marshmallows.

 Squish Marshmallow

Squish Marshmallow sells hand torched marshmallows that are tan on the outside and warm and gooey inside. Some of the flavors include gingerbread, jelly donut, peppermint bark, and chocolate dipped. We tried the chocolate dipped donut flavor that had a crunch. The taste reminded us of s’mores and transported us back to our girl scout days. Not only did we enjoy them, but we liked the unique concept.

Colorful Christmas trees and sculptures are scattered throughout the Union Square Holiday Market.

But what we loved best was their hot chocolate because it tasted authentic. It consisted of cream infused with Dutch cocoa and chocolate blended with vanilla and a touch of sugar. Most importantly, the decadent dark drink burst with cocoa flavor.

If you want to try the hot chocolate and marshmallows at Squish Marshmallow, in addition to Union Square Holiday Market, you can find their shop in Manhattan’s East Village. Also, I would love to know if you like their hot chocolate as much as we.

  1. Dorothy, you just saved me some time! I’m visiting NYC this Christmas and wondered which of the holiday markets I should visit this year. Union Square it is! Having hot chocolate and a squishy marshmallow also sounds like a must-do! We popped in to the Columbus Circle market last year. It was fun, but it looks like this one has more variety. #TheWeeklyPostcard
